Maren MacDonald ::: RHS Prom Night

Well, I always bring up the weather and the conditions of the day and yesterday could not have been worse. If you live here you know it was coming down in buckets, which SUCKS when you want to get some amazing portraits outside, and sucks even more for the grads and their prom, but...you gotta do what ya gotta do.

If you know Maren, you know she is awesome. I have known her for a few years now and she is one of the most unique and caring types of individuals there is. Everyone I know that is close to her says the same. Maren is just a great person and for that reason, she was cool and calm, maybe a little cold, but good to go on a rainy prom day.

We were stuck for a location, then at the last minute I remembered there is a covered garage downtown so we met there and went with it.

As it turns out, Maren, her outfit and her prom date Ian were perfect for this location! It worked better here than it would have with a sunny day and lots of green trees and stuff. An industrial type of location made this session better, in my opinion.

Either way, I'm sure the prom was awesome, enjoy Maren!

Munro Academy Senior ::: Kyara Lee

When Kyara's mom told me that her faith is a big part of her life and that she wanted to do the session in the New Campbellton area and at the Cape Breton Bible Camp, I was excited. She also wanted to incorporate her love of music as well and a lot of the scenery in that area....this was such a win for both of us!

DSC_3019.jpg

No matter what the interests are, having a solid plan and going with it usually works out amazing. Although, this is nothing to stress over, about half of my clients have no idea what they want to incorporate or they just want a bunch of awesome photos and to have some fun. Both ways work!

DSC_2889.jpg

This area was perfect for Kyara, it is very special to her and she will actually be working at the Bible Camp this summer. Helping to create memories that will last a lifetime is a big part of why I love senior photography so much.

This is the entrance to the Camp's Chapel.

You really never know what you will end up with, or how the light will be, or even if you feel you may be carried away by 1,000,000 little black flies. But, that is half of the process, never really knowing and a lot of the time just going with the flow and having fun!

Kyara and her Bible, I love this shot. I can just imagine how many hours she has spent her in lifetime reading and studying this book.

New Campbellton is such an amazing place, the views and scenery are amazing. We spent about 2 hours shooting and didn't really move very far from where we started. So much variety!

Glace Bay High Senior ::: Bryah Boutilier

This will be a long one...there are just too many images....so, sorry but I'm not sorry.

One of my absolute favourite things to do is shoot senior sessions. Each one is different in so many ways and it is because each grad is different in so many ways. It just isn't the same old, same old photo session every time. Which for me, is great because it doesn't get monotonous.

In some ways I need to connect with my clients in order to capture them at their best. My goal is to capture who they are in our images, so getting that ice broken right away is key. Whether that is having a laugh or chatting for a few minutes, one way or the other I need to get things comfortable right away. This was super easy with Bryah!

But, I'll be honest, I'm nervous about every session. I always have been, I believe without being nervous, I am slacking in my creativity and then falling into the unproductive and unimaginative space that I hate being in.

Bryah was great from the start, and so were her parents Nadine and Stephen. Luckily, living in Cape Breton it is really easy to chat with people, it is what we do! I'm guilty of talking the faces off of people all the time, so...maybe that works for me!

Probably my favourite image from the session. The light was coming across the open field and falling on the tree perfectly for me to use some smooth "bokeh" in the front and of course behind Bryah. She killed this session!

Going into this session, we had lots of ideas. So many ideas with outfits, locations, sports theme photos and some indoor stuff with a baby grand piano inside the Savoy Theatre, where Bryah will be working this summer.

BryahB0004.JPG
BryahB0096.JPG

So, how do I capture everything that my clients want in a senior session AND incorporate all of my ideas, which for the most part happen as we are shooting? Basically just shoot shoot shoot, and go with the flow ensuring that all of the bases are covered while trying my best to get as much unique stuff in there as I can.

BryahB0052.JPG
BryahB0036.JPG

The weather and light during this session ended up being so perfect! The light isn't always a huge issue for me as I use off camera lighting for nearly 100% of my images, but the wind SUCKS. I often feel as though I'm going to be told to "F" off from my clients for asking them to get their hair out of their face for 2 hours, but luckily Bryah didn't have that problem!

Speaking of light, check out that background. I'll add a bonus image of the Lingan Power Plant below...it was a crazy display!

The cool thing with the field photos and the power plant back in the background, Bryah's family lives only about 3 minutes from here.

Big shout out to Bryah and her famjam, I had such a great time and LOVE hanging out with cool people for these sessions. It makes the session so awesome!

Check out this photo of the Power Plant I snagged while there. The light from the setting sun was peaking through the clouds and highlighting the power plant so perfectly. You have to low golden hour!

Halifax High School Seniors

Halifax Grads! I'm coming your way this month.

I get quite a few messages from Moms asking me about when I am coming to Halifax and I am starting to book and make the trip specifically for high school senior sessions!

Maybe you don't know what these sessions are all about, well, you can read all about it on this site or specifically read this blog post here.

DSC_1377.jpg

I will be in Halifax the weekend of June 23rd and 24th specifically to shoot seniors, so if you would like to book a spot, let me know asap. Sessions are limited because most of them take between 2-3 hours!

Have a browse around this site for more information on what it is that we do for your senior session or just drop me an email and we can brainstorm some unique ideas!

I am really looking forward to making some images in unique places, so if you have something super cool in mind, let me know!

Glace Bay High Senior ::: Kaileigh

A fantastic session with Kaileigh! Her mom said she is a super laid back girl and she was right. All business, but laid back, which is awesome in my opinion. I may seem like a high energy go-go-go kind of person but I'm actually not, I try my best to be as laid back as possible.

My most favourite thing in the world to do, is chill! Life is way to short to be on the go all the time and stressing about things.

 All about those eyes!

All about those eyes!

Our session started in Dominion on the beach, we got some quick stuff there but the wind was just too much so we made our way towards the city to get some shelter, wind isn't always a bad thing but it was blowing pretty hard, so it was getting a little annoying.

Seriously, those eyes are like ice! Amazing, I did not do a single thing to Kaileigh's eyes in post production, what you see is what they are!

Again with the blue background! Can't stop, won't stop. Sorry, just too good!

We are not quite into summer yet, and some clients are concerned with the leaves not being on the trees for photos, but I can assure you, they are there and I can get the look you want!

Magic happens when the sun is going down!

Magic happens when the sun is going down!

I schedule all of my senior sessions in the evenings, even if we do it on the weekend. The sun dropping and giving us that golden glow of light is what all photographers strive for. It is soft and warm and you can use it in so many different ways.

Blue walls are great in black and white as well.

If you are planning on having your senior session done, don't sleep on it. Now is the time to get booked and get it done before the summer starts to get crazy hot! No one wants to sweat their ass off while doing a session!

Glace Bay High School Senior ::: Sara

Sometimes it is easy to get lazy when things are not going the way you want them, but I think and believe fully that the harder you work, the luckier you get. It was tough to get some good spots to shoot for this one because right as we started this session, it began to rain and got really chilly.

BUT, Sara was awesome, about as laid back and I am, we just had a good laugh and got some great images. I get to meet so many unique people with these types of sessions, I love hearing the grads tell me what their plans for the future are, where they are going after high school and what they want to do with their lives.

It is very refreshing to chat with people who are excited about what is to come! Finishing high school is such a big deal in your lives, having some great images to capture you and for the future to look back on is what makes these sessions so great.

  LOVE me some neon signs!

LOVE me some neon signs!

I'm really feeling the neon sign photography lately, you can get some really unique stuff, but there is a problem. I think there are only about 3 neon signs in all of Cape Breton! You are going to see more of this style in my sessions for sure.

I love playing with light of all sorts and making things work. This may look like only light from the sign, but I added some extra off camera flash as well. Photography is light and this stuff gets me super excited!

Thank goodness for parking garages when the rain starts.

I wonder if you could guess how the image below was made? Do you think the light to her right was enough to light her face or was there more light added? Here is a hint, nearly 100% of my photos are shot with off camera lighting of some sort. Even the photos outside and in the bright sun, with big blue skies.

It really makes a difference to do that, images are crisper, more clear, the eyes of the subject pop much more and it is just better overall light, helping give amazing exposures. It is a much more labouring process, so you need to work harder, but in the end...the quality cannot be matched and moms are usually happy to hold a light stand! lol

I avoided it for a long time because it is so much easier to just shoot, but once I decided to make things better and work harder for my clients, I have not stopped.

Can you guess how many lights?

Even though it was not ideal outside, Sara was a trooper and we just killed this session. Ended up with too many great photos and we had a fun time. If you are thinking on booking a high school senior session, email me today. There are openings in June and July, you can't ever be late in doing a session, I do many after graduation and after the prom!

SA High School Senior ::: McKenna

Without trying to make this blog post sound like an article from the Travel Channel, I have to say I LOVE Louisbourg, it could be one of my favourite places to visit and photograph. You really never know what you will end up with or how the weather will be. It is weird though, sometimes as bad as the weather is in the Sydney area, it could be beautiful in Louisbourg. I have had to take my jacket off out there in January.

We were able to get loads of variety for McKenna's Senior Session this day, although it was raining here and there, everything worked out awesome.

A warm skin tone and a blue background. Ask any photographer and they will tell you that they love this combo. Complimentary colours work amazing in photography.

While it is a little far to drive to, Louisbourg is worth the travel time. I try to only shoot there 2-3 times a season because I don't want to wear it out!

The rainy day brought us some really dramatic skies and surf, it was cold but McKenna was a trooper. The weather changes so fast in this area, if it starts to rain, just wait a few minutes to see what happens.

However, you could shoot there lots and still have so much variety. Kennington Cove is another amazing spot as well, from the drive to the beach, the shoreline and the cliffs. The back entrance to the Fortress of Louisbourg is another amazing drive with some of the coolest coastline on our island, but you need a connection to get access. I have been very lucky over the years and have gotten access a few times.

The sky really opened up at the end of the session, but the old train station museum had a perfect overhang to keep us dry to snag some grad gown photos.

It could be the cleanest part of Cape Breton as well. You can tell the residents care about their town. It is really hard to find any trash thrown around the streets. I'm sure it is there, but very hard to find.

It really is worth a visit for anyone, you never know what is going to happen out at the Lighthouse, the image below gave us amazing light, a double rainbow and some splashing waves. It was incredible!

Double rainbow! OMG! lol. You can just almost see the second one on the right hand side. Lucky!

McKenna was awesome, she was super nervous at first but warmed up really fast. My Senior sessions are not stressful, we aim to have fun and get amazing images. Everything will work out when you know that I am just as interested in getting amazing images for me and for you.

RHS High School Senior ::: Emma

Because you just can't get the best idea of how we do Senior Sessions or how great and detailed a photo can be from Instagram, I'm going to blog post as many of my High School Seniors as possible, starting off with Emma. But don't worry, I didn't skip anyone and will try my best to get around to every senior I shoot.

Emma wanted to show her RHS pride and have some shots taken in front of the school. Also, a photo like this would work perfect for grad party invites and thank you cards!

This session with Emma was fantastic! We lucked out with a great day, great light and to be honest some really great locations. However, a lot of the time we put so much emphasis on the location that it gets a bit stressful. In the end, it isn't nearly as important as we think.

Sure, I really like to highlight our amazing island in some way or another, however...you may be shocked at where some of the photos are taken. In the photos below, I will explain where some of them were shot.

I like to think I am more of a face photographer, I love photographing a little closer to my subjects to really show them and their eyes. So much is in the eyes, but I also love to show off Cape Breton and what we sometimes take for granted!

One of my favourite shots from the session, this is actually on the side of the road in Blacketts Lake. I'm standing on the pavement for this photo. We don't have to go far for beauty.

We started this session in the large field in East Bay beside St. Mary's Catholic Church. There is an old house up on the hill and a massive field. A lot of times, just finding one cool spot to meet up with my clients is key, from there, anything is possible.

Directly behind the church are these spaced out trees, there are quite a few options on this whole property. Below is another example.

Just back a little from the shot above this one is another almost perfect line of tall trees, good light and that cool house in the back!

In the parking lot of the church, sometimes shots like this work, sometimes they don't. I like the leading line with the paint that leads the eye directly to Emma and that warm sunlight sneaking in through the back.. She was a trooper for just doing whatever I asked, laying, sitting or jumping on anything!

Of course, with how I shoot every image, I always need a helping hand from a parent on our sessions. I use off camera lights for my sessions and when it is windy I can't risk my equipment tipping over and falling over.

Mom to the rescue!

This is actually a great thing for me. Moms will typically see things that I won't. A hair out of place or a shirt sitting a certain way that is not flattering. They don't become directors of the photo session but it is always great to have an extra set of eyes.

The old brown school building next to Gillis Lake Road works so well. You get that rustic feeling here, with the old steps and it's very close to the road so we made a quick stop while on the way back to my "#stillunderrenovationstudio" for a quick grad gown portrait.

Yup! I'm still doing the grad gown photos. A lot of the time we do these outside, which you will see in the coming posts, but when we are close to my studio, we drop in for a quick shoot. I like to stay away from the studio as much as possible. I am afraid I will spend too much time in there and not enough outside being creative with locations. However, I still love it in there and will use it when needed!

Why Senior Photography?

High School Senior sessions are a fun way to really show off who you are in your final high school year!

The cool thing about senior sessions and Canada, is they really never did exist. They are HUGE in the United States, but they are rarely heard about in Canada. Myself and some other great photographers have been working hard to really spread them here and help make them part of what each grad does in their graduating year.

I first learned about senior sessions when I was in high school, that was about 20 years when the great John Ratchford (the original senior rock star) was doing his best at getting them off the ground. However, back then...it just wasn't what it is today. But thanks to his hard work and years of sessions, we are making a blip in the Canadian senior radar.

Long gone are the days of spending 5 minutes in a chair with a bookcase for a back ground and a stuffy gown, wait...I still do the gown photos, however I do them all on location. I don't shoot in my studio a lot anymore. We have such a beautiful island, why not spend each session outside exploring new places?

Each session typically lasts about 2-3 hours, I don't rush, I don't book more than one senior session a day and I love travelling to places that I have not shot before. I want to capture portraits in as many places as I can. The goal is to have each session contain as least some element that is unique and different than the last.

My main focus as a photographer now is only wedding and senior photography. To specialize in just two aspects or portraiture helps me become a much more creative individual and keeps me fresh. Instead of shooting everything that I possibly can, I can put all my effort, focus and drive into these two main styles and define myself and the type of photographer I am.

When I first started my photography career, I was a generalist lacking focus and any sort of direction at all. I just wanted to shoot and do great work. However, it just didn't work that well (I burned out). As much as I love to shoot, there are many local photographers on the island that just do a better job at certain things than I do, because they specialize in them. Wendy Gouthro for example, if you have a newborn or want a maternity session, she is the one you should go to. She is on FIRE, I love her work.

Becoming one of the top high school senior photographers in Canada and showing the world what Canadian Photographers are capable of is another goal, our country has some of the most talented photographers in the world, have a look sometime.

That is it for now, it's late and I just finished this new website...hope you like it!

S.
